Notes:
- Earth contains naturally occurring elements, minerals, rocks, liquids, gases, biological materials and mixtures.
- A chemical element, a mineral, a rock and a manufactured material are different categories. For example, iron is an element, hematite is a mineral, and steel is a manufactured alloy.
- Some materials occur naturally in relatively pure form, while others occur only as mixtures or compounds and must be processed before use.
- Many materials listed here are renewable biological resources, while others are finite geological resources.
- Modern manufactured materials such as plastics, concrete, glass and steel are also found on Earth, but they are generally produced through human processing rather than occurring naturally in their familiar commercial forms.
- This is a selection of 50 important natural materials and substances, not a complete inventory of every material on Earth.
