Crystalline Germanium-Based Infrared Metamaterial, (Ge-IR96) is a technical designation for a highly engineered infrared metamaterial based on Germanium, which is designed to absorb up to 96% of incident infrared radiation. It was created by experts at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), this material exploits ordered germanium crystal formation to nearly eliminate infrared reflections. The technology is specifically engineered for incorporation into advanced military optoelectronics, which includes highly sensitive thermal sensors, focal plane arrays, and multiple-band night vision goggles (NVGs).[1]
Working Technology
The core mechanics of Ge-IR96 hinge on the intrinsic semiconductor attributes of ultra-purified germanium (\(Ge\)), an element that inherently boasts prominent transmission zones in the mid-wave (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) regions, particularly within a spectral range from 2 to 14 micrometres.
