Bharat Rice is an initiative by Government of India which was started on 12 October 2026 in New Delhi to improve the quality of rice supplied to defence personnel. Its goal is to guarantee the prompt supply of top-tier rice to soldiers, especially those posted in remote and challenging locations like Ladakh and the northeastern part of India. The launch event was present by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.[1] [2]
History
In February 2024, the Government of India introduced the Bharat Rice initiative under the Bharat brand for the general public. Its main goal was to ensure rice was available at reasonable prices to consumers and to assist in stabilizing food prices. Subsequently, on October 12, 2026, the Indian Army introduced a separate arrangement for supplying Bharat Rice to defence personnel, over nearly 18 months, coordination has been conducted among the Army, [3] the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), and the Department of Food and Public Distribution.[4]
The initiative is centered on enhancing the quality of rations and solidifying the military supply chain. The rice will be processed in accordance with specified military requirements and subjected to quality inspections to reduce the presence of foreign particles, unintended additions, and compromised grains. It will be available in 10-kilogram and 30-kilogram bags for ease of handling and transport, particularly at forward locations.[5]
A crucial feature includes direct rice delivery to Army supply depots, cutting down the need for these depots to collect supplies from local FCI facilities.[6]
Agreement with the Food Corporation of India
With launch, the Indian Army signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Food Corporation of India to use its warehouses, manpower and material-handling equipment during operational contingencies. This five-year pact aims to boost storage capacity, speed up vital supply movements, and enhance logistical readiness for military operations. The insights gleaned from Operation Sindoor underscored the crucial role of a robust supply chain[7]
